New MMG Office in South Africa
11/02/2011
The UK market’s a great place to be for good citrus growers. Quality product is well-rewarded with consistent, forward-programmed business, but as with most things in life, you’re well-advised to surround yourself with the right people. Companies like MMG Citrus are keeping the UK a viable, proftable key market for many of South Africa’s fnest growers, and we’re looking for more of the best.
A business dedicated solely to citrus and one of the UK’s largest importers, MMG will be taking more than 1m cartons from this year’s South African crop. Andy Froggatt is our man on the ground for the SA citrus season, assisted by Stephanie De Wit. Andy, a senior manager, leads our procurement team with frequent farm visits. He fnds us the right fruit for our four main customers – all well-known names on the UK and Irish high street.
About MMG
MMG Citrus was formed in 2007 from a joint venture between UK importer and marketer Mack Multiples and Spanish citrus giant Martinavarro. The creation of MMG was the formalisation of a close business relationship that’s existed for over 50 years. A commercial, logistics and operations team is based at Paddock Wood in Kent, UK, with a satellite office in Stellenbosch. MMG are also stakeholders in Liverpool Produce Terminal, and have staff on site at the Port of Liverpool.
So what’s diferent about MMG Citrus?
It’s not all about the size of business or just down to expertise. Whilst we know our products and our market inside out, and are dependably loyal, this business is also about margins and cutting the fat out of the supply chain. We’re shareholders in a freight logistics business that means we can move your citrus quickly and cost efectively. No agents needed and no additional margins to worry about. We pay at packhouse gate stage or on delivery into port. Our quality control people work with your teams to make sure you’re growing and packing to our clear specifcations and avoiding costly, unnecessary rejections later down the chain.
It’s clear that the South African export business has evolved in recent years, so we’ve modelled the MMG Citrus business to suit. We’re able to run a transparent pricing model that means our retail customers and our growers get to see exactly where the costs lie. This goes all the way back to source, so everyone’s happy that growers are getting a fair price and a fair return, and that we’re adding real value in the chain for our side of the bargain. It’s a very refreshing way of doing business, encouraging positive links and conversation between grower and retailer.
We have an eye on stable growth and investment in the future of our supply base in South Africa too. When you call, ask us about our varietal development work, our sustainability work and our industry investments that are helping secure a strong future for our business and those of our growers.
